Explained: How to switch plan managers

You’re allowed to change plan managers at any stage in your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) journey – no ifs, buts or maybes.
Whether you’re ready to make a move right away, or you’re thinking about your options, this simple guide explains how to switch plan managers in three easy steps. And it’ll give you answers to frequently asked questions about switching too, so you have all the information you need to act.
Three steps to switching plan managers
Step 1: Choose your new plan manager
The first step is to find a new plan manager. There’s many to choose from, so it might be helpful to get a recommendation from a person you trust, do some desktop research, or connect with someone at a disability expo.
Found the right plan manager for you? Contact them to sign up. Signing up will involve sharing your details and signing a service agreement, so have your NDIS information handy.
At this point, it’s also a good idea to confirm who will communicate the change to your providers. That’s because your providers will need to know where to send their invoices, and the date your service agreement with your new plan manager starts.
Step 2: Tell your current plan manager you're switching
Next, let your current plan manager know that you’re moving to a new provider. If that feels uncomfortable, just remember that you deserve support that works best for you and changing providers is a normal part of finding the right fit.
Your relationship with your current plan manager will end once the notice period is over, which is usually 14-30 days from the time you tell them you’re switching. You can check your service agreement to be sure.
Step 3: Record your new plan manager as a my provider
Lastly, it’s time to record your new plan manager as a my provider (some people call this ‘endorsing’). You can do that by calling the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110 (from 8am-7pm local time, Monday to Friday), or through the my NDIS participant portal, which you can access via MyGov.
Some plan managers (like My Plan Manager) will help you complete this step by sending you a my provider relationship request. You can accept the request through the my NDIS participant portal.
Congratulations, you've made the switch!
After you’ve taken those steps, there shouldn’t be anything more for you to do. Your current plan manager and your new one will work together to make sure your transfer is completed.
Common questions about switching plan managers
Why do people change plan managers?
There are many reasons why people decide to change their plan manager. Here are some examples of why people make a switch:
- they want quicker payment of invoices and claims for reimbursement
- they need more responsive and knowledgeable support
- their plan manager is closing, or won’t be offering plan management services anymore
Does it cost anything to change plan managers?
There are no fees or hidden costs if you decide to change plan managers.
Plan management is a support funded by the NDIA to help participants manage their NDIS funding. The fees paid to a plan manager are set and capped and come from a specific budget – Improved Life Choices (part of Capacity Building Supports). This funding is specifically allocated for plan management and doesn’t affect any other budgets or supports.
Will my supports be affected if I change plan managers?
If you decide to switch plan managers, your supports will continue as normal. From your providers’ perspective, the only thing that changes is where they send their invoices. And from yours, you should be receiving plan management support you’re happy with.
